FIC-GTA001 Linux Phone With Built-In GPS

FIC, a Taiwan-based motherboard manufacturer, has decided to expand its business market and will soon release its own smartphone called the FIC-GTA001. Boasts built-in GPS functionalities and integrated iPod-quality (or so it claimed) MP3 player, this GSM cell phone offers a 2.8-inch touch screen display with a resolution of 480×640 and multi-touch gesture recognition, USB connectivity, and emergy paging button.

Since FIC-GTA001 cell phone will be using Linux as its operating system, most software on the phone will have the spirit of the fat penguin (read: open source) and you can expect the growing list of software from the community. One of the planned software is the capability to capture hand gestures for controlling the device. This would allow you to for example zoom into a map using a pinching motion and pan by twisting fingers around as if holding a compass while using the GPS navigation software on board.

Gigabyte Unveils GSmart i200 Cell Phone

During the 3GSM World Congress Asia 2006, Gigabyte Communications reveals its latest smartphone, the GSmart i200. As the first DVB-H Windows Mobile 5.0-based cell phone, it boasts its capabilities to display DVB-H and DVH-T-based TV programme, as well as radio and other media, along with (somehow limited) direct TV recording function onto its built-in 512MB of onboard memory. If the 2.69-inch VGA touch screen display is not big enough, users can always take advantage of the provided TV-out port and enjoy the satellite broadcasted media on a bigger screen. Well, We’ve just heard about the G-Smart i200 cell phone, and today Gigabyte already surprises us with the G-Smart i300 device. Shown off during the Asia 3GSM Conference, the i300 is a PDA phone packed with a built-in GPS receiver, Bluetooth antenna, and an integrated 2 megapixel digital camera. It comes with a Bluetooth headset that can be used as a security device such that if the headset is activated during an emergency, it will prompt the phone to send a message with the last known coordinates to pre-assigned numbers that can be left with friends, family, even colleagues.
